2nd Interview with Bernadette

Bern in the Chair
It's time for another character interview. This is our second time interviewing Bernadette, who is a main character of Flipside. Hello, Bernadette.
Hello!
It's been awhile since your last interview. A lot has changed since then, including a few secrets that have come to light.
I suppose so...!
Let's begin. The first question comes from Selan: What was it like, growing up in a brothel?
Well... it was pretty lonely. They tried to keep me isolated from the goings on, but that meant I spent most of the time in my room, or the reading room. I suppose I read a lot of books.
Churba: I know Technical Questions are no fun, but How adaptable is the split Rose Technique? For example, if you lose a Sword, does it have a One weapon style, or would you be somewhat at a disadvantage?
Well, I'm afraid that the Split Rose style is not very adaptable at all. I suppose that's one of it's weaknesses. I would be at a big disadvantage if I lost one of my swords.
Toyota: What is your worst fear?
My worst fear...? I suppose I would have to say losing Maytag...
Alouradona: Who's the better cook, you or Maytag?
I don't think I could say in good consience that either of us are a good cook! We're both okay. I can cook certain things, and so can Maytag.
Gold: Do you have any interest in BDSM?
I'm afraid I don't know what that is...?
Radical Dreamer: Which version of Maytag's personality do you like more? The shy one or the active one?
I love them both!
Sunaloralei: Would you be willing to have an open relationship with Maytag, like Umber?
I don't know Umber... but my preference is to have a monogamous relationship with her.
Ebon of Haint: Hello Bernadette. You're lovely, and so is Maytag. You're very lucky. But haven't you ever suspected her as the kind of person to cheat on you? You seem to give her a lot of blind trust. What about her intrigues you so much that you gave up your dreams for her?
Thank you, but... I don't really feel comfortable talking about that subject.
Irqy: Mes salutations, gente Bernadette. I am wondering about your first name: is it your poor mother who gave you it? Do you know that it is french? (and a bit old-fashionned...)
What is "French"?
Monster91: Um, hello Bernadette. I was wondering, if need be, would you use another style besides The Split Rose if you needed two? Say your opponent refused to attack, but meant to have the battle? (And by the way, you rule.)
Uhh, thank you... well, I suppose I could use a different style, but I probably wouldn't. My style is really not suited for a soldier, or mercenary, or anyone who's job is to kill. It is only suited for protection. So you might say it's ideal for a bodyguard. If someone refuses to attack, then my best weapon is patience.
Dragornith: If you could get a second sword identical to Grants, would you use it?? or would you continue to abstain for the simple fact that the sword has magic in it (even that used to destroy magic)?
I really don't know. But... I feel like I should hear him out, and give it a try.
Chag4: Have you ever had sex with a man before?
........ Um, that's quite personal...!
Gubit: Hey Bernadette, just curious about your "split-rose" technique. Have you ever fought an enemy who uses ranged. Or perhaps a sorcerer? Since alot of your technique seems dependent on range or disarming your opponent, are you a sitting duck for ranged opponents?
Well, to be honest with you the Split Rose style is very little good against a ranged attacker... but the same is true of any melee style. In that situation, the only tactics are to either close the distance or run away. The same is basically true for sorcerers as well.
Rainnes:Dear Bernadette, I just must commend you on your ever unfaltering composure. You've been through a lot with Maytag, from revenge-bent sorcerors, to crazy magickfied swordsmen, and also to basically being outed. The amount of love you two have between each other's amazing. That being said, how is riding off to find Grant devoting your life to, and only to, Maytag? Shouldn't you guys go on a sort of honeymoon instead?
I'm afraid I don't really understand your question, Mr Rainnes... isn't the important thing that I am by Maytag's side, protecting her? In that case, what's the difference between going on a quest and a "honeymoon?" Of course, I suppose having Crest along takes away a bit of the romance, but I felt like I had to agree to Orransong's condition. In any case, if Maytag didn't want to go on this quest, then I would have stayed with her... of that you can be sure. But you don't know Maytag like I do. To her, roaming the land and going on quests is very much like a honeymoon! I know that she's happy to get out of that town.
Kuroji: I have to admit I'm curious -- as you're training Crest, are you just giving him general purpose training for the time being, or do you intend to also give him more advanced training such as fighting styles? And if so, do you intend to teach him the split rose technique?
That will depend on Crest... but for right now, we will start with the basics.
Chag4: How did the split rose get it's name?
.... I'm afraid I honestly don't know. Grant was the one who first taught it to me. He didn't explain where it came from, and I never thought to ask.
Gubit: Is a second sword truly more effective than a shield? I have also noted that not even the guards seem to be carrying shields. Has a shield not yet been invented? If not that is odd since you yourself acted as a human shield.
That's a very good question, Mr. Gubit. Yes, in some situations a shield would be better, like for example if you are up against a ranged attacker. But for close fighting, two swords has a distinct advantage over a sword/shield: you can counter attack with both arms. Of course, you have to be truly ambidextrous to pull that off... but for a style that focuses on counter-attacks, it is a big advantage to be able to counter with either arm. Also, you can't really parry with a shield.
Neferiel: do you realize all the people who read this comic saw you halfway naked a few times? what do you think of that?
........ That honestly never occured to me... and I wish it hadn't...!
Toyota: What would you do if you came up against an opponent with a heavy two handed sword?
You're thinking that if my opponent's weapon is strong enough, it can break my swords. But it's not that easy to break steel, even with a bigger weapon. I just have to be careful of how I handle the force of bigger weapons, but sometimes it's stronger force can also be a weakness.
Selan: What made you decide to grow your hair? (the shorter hair looked really cute on you)
Why, thank you... actually, it was Maytag who told me she'd like to see me with longer hair.
Darque: You are a great deal more forgiving than most people would be towards Crest, after that incident where he burst in on Maytag and yourself... Has it occurred to you to wonder why Crest was picking the lock of your door and peeking in, at such a late hour of the night no less?
Picking the lock? No, I'm sure one of us must have forgotten to lock the door... I believe it was all just an accident.
Inai: Is it hard to be a swordsman? I would like to be one... I love swords. Do you have any advise for me? It will be very helpful...
If you really want to be a swordsman, the first thing you should do is train your body! You can't do anything unless you are physically fit. The second thing would be to find a mentor who can teach you!
Chag4: I have been wondering for a while, if lesbians are allowed to marry in the world of Flipside. And if they are, have you ever or would you start to think about marrying Maytag? That would be so sweet!
Well, to be honest I'm not completely certain. I've heard that most churches won't mary a couple of the same sex, but I suppose it probably depends on the religion. However, neither Maytag or I are particularly religious, so there's no real reason for us to get married.
Ramsus: Cake or Death?
Uhhh... I suppose cake...?
Dizz: Umm hi, well im sort of new to this sort of thing, but i was wondering why your hair is white at the front, cos it looks really nice
Thank you! To be honest, I was born this way. It wasn't a concious choice. But, I'm happy with it!
Grayson: Lady Bernadette, aside from Maytag, is there any other thing or belief that you hold that you would give your life to defend? If so, what are they? Thank you for your time, it’s been an honor to speak with such an admirable woman.
Why, thank you! Well... I can't think of any more worthwhile cause to give your life to than defending your family, or friends.
Me-me: What would you have done if Voulger had decided you not worthy to attack, and simply walked off with Maytag?
Well... I would have had no choice but to attack, naturally! But the Split Rose is not an offensive style, so I would be at a disadvantage. Generally, it is always better if I can goad my opponent into attacking me first. And of course, it's better if the people I am protecting are behind me, so that the opponent must go through me first. Make no mistake, the Split Rose is a specialized style, and it has weaknesses.
Chag4: Are you aware that the world you live in is a fantasy, made up by and author and put on the internet just to make people hungry and tired of waiting for updates, and that you are also just a paper with some ink on it?
Huh? That's silly!
Forest: I noticed in a previous question you mentioned that you prefer a monogomous relationship. I was wondering, what do you feel personally are the benefits of a monogomous relationship?
Ummm... it's just something that I feel is right.
This concludes our interview. Thank you.
You're welcome!
